4. Demolition and Installations

What a big week!

Saturday morning a shipping container was delivered to the site. We'll use this as a temporary 'shed' while the house is being built. The delivery wasn't without incident (of course). Because of the wet weather the access road to the top of the block was quite slippery and we were concerned that the truck would have trouble getting up there. After one failed attempt the driver reversed back down and told J that he'd try again in first gear! No trouble at all that time.
Having positioned some planks at the position of the rear of the container, the driver then moved forward, tilted the tray, reversed quickly and slammed on the brakes. The desired effect was for the container to slide gracefully off the truck onto the ground. The actual effect was - nothing at all! After a couple of attempts, the driver got out, scratched his head and stared at it in a rather perplexed manner. Then - in a flash of the blinding obvious he said "s'pose it'd be a good idea if I took the pins out..."  Needless to say, that worked, and with only a little more maneuvering the container was in place.

We then spent the next couple of days moving all the landscaping materials that we wanted to keep. This included old railway sleepers, edging rocks and granite pavers. We had to get these moved before the demolition crew arrived on Tuesday (it was the Anzac Day long weekend).

Tuesday morning the demolition crew arrived and began to remove the salvagable materials from the shed - there wasn't much!

Then the big machine arrived (23 tonne excavator) arrived and it was 'goodbye shed'!

The two water tanks for the top block were delivered on Wednesday morning ...

...and installed Friday, along with a delivery of 11,500 litres of water.

Oh yes, and we moved house too!
